Reece Wright, a senior at Independence High School, received a 2023 Scholastic Art & Writing Honorable Mention Award for her writing anthology, “Climate Grief.” Last year she won a Gold Key Award.
“Climate grief is about the six stages of grief that I have gone through in my environmental science studies,” said Wright. “It is about how the world can still be healed from pollution and heightened carbon emissions. At the end of grief comes meaning, and I’ve found my meaning in helping to heal the Earth.”
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition is presented by The Cleveland Institute of Art. “This is a remarkable achievement,” said the director’s of the competition in the letter Wright received announcing her award. Wright’s work was recognized by a panel of creative professionals as the most outstanding work submitted among her peers.
Wright is part of the district’s JustWrite team that took first place in December. One of her stories from the tournament is being considered for publication by the JustWrite director.
