purple star

Independence High School has been named a 2025 Purple Star School by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, a prestigious honor that recognizes the school’s outstanding commitment to supporting military-connected students and families.

In a letter addressed to Superintendent Kelli Cogan, Director Stephen D. Dackin applauded the school for meeting the rigorous criteria set by Ohio’s Purple Star Advisory Board. The designation highlights Independence High School’s efforts to address the unique wellness and academic needs of military-connected youth, particularly during school transitions.

“Ohio’s military-connected youth require supports that consider their unique wellness and academic needs,” Dackin wrote. “The Purple Star award signifies your school’s demonstrated commitment to serving these students and families.”

The Purple Star designation is valid for three years, and the school will be eligible to reapply for renewal in the fall of 2027 to be considered for the Class of 2028.  Independence High School now joins Independence Middle School who was awarded this designation last year.

This honor places Independence High School among a select group of schools across the state dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for military families—a commitment that will leave a lasting impact on the community.
