Independence High School students are learning about the world of work through a recently created and exciting new class entitled Career Exploration. The elective course features topics that introduce students to individuals with various backgrounds and experiences, with the intention of helping them identify their own interests and personality traits. In the process, students learn about new and evolving careers, the value of developing workplace skills and exploring how careers come together during guest speaker days. As students participate in teamwork activities, thoughtful discussion about life after high school, and conversations with professionals in various career areas, they become future-ready.
“When speakers are invited to present, our course goal is to spark thoughts about students’ respective career paths, understand needed skills, and become educated about all the possibilities that can emerge from a college degree, or a career,” said instructor Jess Crooks.
Thank you to this month’s guest speakers who have imparted valuable insights into specific jobs, shared their career paths and talked with our students:
Mary Petrea Cober - pharmacist
Jim Crooks - strategic communications company owner, adjunct professor, coach
Jessie Siegferth - nurse anesthetist
