On Friday, April 4, Independence Middle School welcomed a special group of guest teachers—high school students from the PEAT (Physical Education and Athletic Training) program—led by teacher Jess Crooks. These students collaborated with fifth and sixth-grade health classes to deliver an impactful lesson on the many dangers of vaping.
This powerful partnership between Independence High and Middle School is a recurring effort, taking place three times each school year. What makes this experience unique is that the high school students take full responsibility for leading the lesson, connecting with younger students on a peer level that resonates deeply.
“Hearing the teaching come from high school students and not just another teacher helps the students relate to the topic even more,” said middle school teacher Ken Scott. “It’s a valuable learning experience for both age groups.”
The lesson wrapped up with students designing their own anti-vaping pamphlets—an engaging activity that reinforces the facts and allows them to express their understanding creatively.
The team of high school presenters, many of whom are former middle school students themselves, included Sam Crooks, David Crooks, Gio Hasrouni, Haley Wilson, Ryan Suhey, Sabrina George, Sophia Pichert, and Liam Reinerth.
