Residents of Independence are invited to attend the State of the Schools Address on Wednesday, May 7, from 6-8 p.m. in the Independence Middle School auditorium. Superintendent Kelli Cogan and Treasurer Jennifer Knapp, both in their first year with the district, will discuss the progress made throughout the school year, including the adoption of the district’s new Strategic Vision and plans for future facility improvements.
The Strategic Vision, titled "Cultivating a Legacy of Excellence," was developed through months of collaboration with students, staff, families, and community members. The framework, created in partnership with the Schlechty Center, is designed to uphold the district’s strong foundation while embracing innovation and growth. The vision is guided by four key strategic priorities:
Empowering Whole Child Development
Designing Valuable Experiences and Work
Aligning Resources and Knowledge for Collaborative Growth
Creating an Inclusive and Welcoming Community Environment
Cogan and Knapp will also provide a financial update and discuss a bond issue that will appear on the fall ballot to address facility needs at Independence Primary School and Independence Middle School.
This winter, the district partnered with Architectural Vision Group, Ltd. (AVG) to conduct a facilities assessment, evaluating 23 critical building systems, including heating, roofing, electrical, security, and technology infrastructure. Results will be shared during the presentation. This assessment helped determine the best course of action for modernizing the district’s schools and to move forward with a bond issue.
Community members are encouraged to attend the State of the Schools Address to learn more about the district’s future and provide input on key initiatives. Residents interested in further discussions can watch for upcoming announcements regarding community meetings and engagement opportunities.
The IHS National Honor Society students will be providing child care.
