Independence Middle School (IMS) eighth graders Lauren Olexa and Joseph Mosgo were recognized among Northeast Ohio's top student leaders at the 8th Annual Breakfast of Champions, hosted by the Ohio Middle Level Association (OMLA).
The event took place on March 6 at the Independence Civic Center, where students, accompanied by their families, teachers, and administrators, were celebrated for their exemplary character, leadership, and academic achievements.
Lauren was honored in the Leadership category for her role as Vice President of Student Council, where she has taken the initiative to increase school spirit. She is also active in Yearbook, Builders Club, Band, and WIMS (school video announcements). As a member of WEB (Where Everyone Belongs), she mentors fifth-grade students to help them adjust to middle school. Lauren also balances her academics with multiple extracurriculars, including basketball, cross country, and track.
Joseph received recognition in the Character category for his dedication to academics and leadership in athletics. Known for his trustworthiness and willingness to help classmates, Joseph is a role model at IMS. He is active in cross country, basketball, and track and has served as a leader on the basketball court.
The honored IMS students received certificates, starfish keychains, and framed photos during the celebratory breakfast. The OMLA recognition highlights their dedication and commitment to excellence both in and out of the classroom.
