Independence High School junior Mia Ricotta is taking significant steps toward her dream career in pediatric oncology through Cuyahoga Valley Career Center’s (CVCC) Health Careers program. Under the guidance of instructor Michael Zana, Mia is gaining hands-on experience that will help shape her future in the medical field.
Mia’s passion for healthcare was ignited at a young age, but it became deeply personal after she lost her mother to breast cancer. Determined to make a difference in the lives of young patients, she set her sights on pediatric oncology. “All I want to do is help people, and I love kids,” Mia shared.
By the time she graduates from high school, Mia will have earned her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification, a milestone that brings her one step closer to her ultimate goal of becoming either a pediatric oncology nurse or doctor.
Mia credits CVCC for transforming her perspective on education. “Coming to CVCC has completely changed my outlook on school. I’m much more dedicated and focused, and I actually enjoy coming to class,” she said. She also values the opportunity to collaborate with students from different programs and school districts, calling it a “cool experience.”
Among her favorite aspects of the program are the hands-on learning experiences, including using a stethoscope for the first time. “Hearing someone’s heartbeat is incredible. It really makes you think—wow, that’s someone’s heart,” Mia said. She also enjoys learning essential skills like taking vital signs and measuring height and weight.
Outside of her medical studies, Mia is a dedicated member of the Independence High School softball team. In her free time, she enjoys playing video games, watching horror movies, and spending time with her family.
Mia’s biggest advice to others is to believe in themselves and embrace new challenges. “Don’t doubt yourself. You can do it—there’s no ‘I can’t.’ You just have to challenge yourself to take the leap,” she said. She credits her guidance counselor at Independence High School for encouraging her to enroll in the Health Careers program and take the first step toward her dream.
Instructor Michael Zana has high praise for Mia’s dedication and perseverance. “Mia is a phenomenal student with incredible potential. She prioritizes her responsibilities, approaches everything with maturity, and never hesitates to ask questions or help others,” he said.
Mia acknowledges her family as her biggest source of motivation and support. “My family is everything to me. I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without them,” she said.
With her determination, passion, and unwavering support system, Mia Ricotta is well on her way to making a lasting impact in the medical field.
