Independence Local Schools transformed its fieldhouse into a celebration of inclusivity on December 11, hosting the Empower Sports Inclusive Sports Day. The event brought together 75 students from across the Chagrin Valley Conference (CVC), with 30 peer volunteers from Independence High School providing support and companionship.

The day was filled with inclusive athletics and creative expression, featuring four stations that kept participants actively engaged. Students rotated through kickball, soccer, basketball, and music therapy, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to experience a variety of activities. Each 15-minute rotation maintained an energetic atmosphere, culminating in a lunch and dance that brought everyone together.

"This day is about more than just sports," said Intervention Specialist Brittany Lapaglia, Independence Local Schools. “It's about creating connections, building confidence, and showing that everyone can participate and have fun."

The event was made possible through the generous support of key community partners, including the City of Independence and ICAN program, Empower Sports, Chagrin Valley Conference, Jim Wotoweic and the Autism Society of Greater Cleveland. Their time, donations, and commitment helped create an unforgettable experience for all participants.

“Special recognition goes to the Independence High School peer volunteers, who played a crucial role in supporting visiting athletes and embodying the day's spirit of inclusion and teamwork,” said Lapaglia.

“My experience was really great and super powerful,” said Senior Anna Waski, who was one of the peer volunteers. “I had a great experience throughout the day, meeting many new friends and just soaking up the experience. I enjoyed being hands-on and involved in all the activities, like kickball. I would always pick someone from each group to help me pitch the ball and be with me so I could bond a little closer to someone new every time. It was amazing to see how friendly everyone was and how everyone just wanted to make friends with each other. Everyone was also so helpful and always trying to get everyone involved. I loved this experience and would do it again in a heartbeat.”

School districts that attended included Cuyahoga Heights, Brooklyn, Orange, Conneaut, Beachwood, Madison, Berkshire, Kirtland, and Independence.
