Young innovators at Independence Primary School transformed an ordinary classroom into an engineering laboratory during an exciting STEM challenge that proved learning can be deliciously fun. Second-grade students recently participated in the Marshmallow Spaghetti Tower Challenge, where they discovered the true meaning of teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving.

Given nothing more than fragile spaghetti noodles and fluffy marshmallows, student teams embarked on an architectural adventure. Their mission? Construct the tallest freestanding structure possible using only these two unlikely building materials. The classroom buzzed with excitement as students carefully balanced, connected, and strategized their tower designs.

Throughout the challenge, young engineers quickly learned valuable lessons about structural stability, design thinking, and collaborative problem-solving. Some towers swayed precariously, while others stood tall—each attempt teaching students something new about engineering principles and teamwork.

"It was amazing to watch our second graders approach this challenge with such enthusiasm and creativity," said Design Technology teacher Kerry Morosko. "They learned that success comes from working together, being patient, and not being afraid to try new ideas."
