On November 20, fourth graders at Independence Primary School embarked on a field trip to the Hunger Network and Front Steps. This experiential learning activity connected to the students' reading of the book "Crenshaw" by Katherine Applegate, which explores the impact of poverty on families.
After discussing the book's themes, the students felt compelled to take action and help those facing similar challenges in their local community. Recognizing the limited access to basic needs like shelter and food, the students decided to organize a donation drive.
The fourth graders gathered essential items to contribute to the Hunger Network and Front Steps. This hands-on service project aimed to make a tangible difference for families in need within the Independence area.
The fourth graders' field trip and donation drive reflected the school's goal of fostering empathy and community engagement. By connecting classroom learning to real-world impact, the school empowered students to be agents of positive change.
