Independence Local Schools Superintendent Kelli Cogan has established a new Student Advisory Committee to directly engage with students and gather feedback on their school experiences. The committee, which consists of middle and high school students, held its inaugural meeting on November 25 in the Independence High School Media Center.

During the meeting, students participated in a "Two Truths and a Dream" icebreaker. Each student shared two true facts about themselves and one aspiration, allowing their peers to guess which was the "dream.”

The discussion then shifted to students' perspectives on their overall school experience and what areas they think need to be improved. They discussed what they liked most about their school experience, what challenges they face academically and socially, and how the district can better support their learning and professional growth.  They also discussed what programs, activities, or resources would improve student engagement.

The conversation then turned to cell phone use in schools.  Students provided great feedback on cell phones in schools, how they use their phone during the school day, and ways that the schools can balance the benefits of cell phone use while maintaining focus and minimizing distractions.

Cogan expressed gratitude for the students' candid feedback, stating, "This committee will be instrumental in shaping a more positive and enriching school experience for our learners." The group plans to convene quarterly to identify actionable steps forward.
