Independence Local Schools, in partnership with the City of Independence and the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) educational group, is set to host a vital Social Media and Tech Night for families on Thursday, November 21 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Independence High School auditorium. This event aims to equip parents and adults with essential knowledge and tools to protect children and themselves from the potential risks associated with social media and online activities.
The Social Media and Tech Night will focus on two critical areas:
1. Addressing social media challenges that may pose risks to children
2. Identifying and preventing potential predator situations in the digital world
Attendees can expect to gain valuable insights into the current digital landscape and learn practical strategies for ensuring online safety. The event underscores the school district and city’s commitment to fostering a safe and informed community in the face of rapidly evolving technology and social media platforms.
"In today's digital age, it's crucial that parents and guardians are well informed about the online world our children navigate daily," said Superintendent Kelli Cogan, Independence Local Schools. "This event is an important step in empowering our community to protect our young people while allowing them to benefit from technology responsibly."
In addition to the family-focused event, the school district is in the final planning stages for complementary student presentations. These sessions will ensure that the entire school community—both adults and students—are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to stay safe online.
The collaboration between Independence Local Schools, City of Independence’s INDYAlive!, and the ICAC educational group highlights the community-wide approach to addressing these important issues. This partnership allows for a comprehensive and expert-led program that benefits from diverse perspectives and resources.
Families are strongly encouraged to attend this informative and potentially life-saving event. For more information, please contact Mr. Jamie Vanek, Principal at Independence Middle School at jvanek@independence.k12.oh.us.
“The Independence Local Schools remain committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for all students, both in the classroom and in the digital realm,” said Cogan. “This Social Media and Tech Night is a testament to that ongoing commitment and the strong community partnerships that make such initiatives possible.”
