Independence High School junior Kayla Newcomer is constructing more than just buildings in the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center's (CVCC) Construction Trades program. She's building a future career, developing crucial life skills, and forming invaluable industry connections.
Since attending CVCC, Kayla has experienced a significant boost in her time management abilities. "Balancing two schools has been a major adjustment and has really made me prioritize managing my time," Kayla reflects. This skill, essential in both academic and professional settings, has already proven invaluable as she juggles her responsibilities at Independence High School and CVCC.
Kayla's growth is largely attributed to the guidance of her instructor, Mr. Yuravak. "I'm so grateful for Mr. Yuravak – he challenges us every day and constantly reminds us of what we're capable of," she says. His dedication to pushing students beyond their perceived limits has been instrumental in Kayla's development.
But it's not just the faculty who are making a difference in Kayla's educational journey. Through Mr. Yuravak's industry connections, Kayla was introduced to Tylar VanNess, a recent graduate of the Construction Trades program who has quickly become a leader in the field. This mentorship has opened Kayla's eyes to the possibilities that lie ahead.
"Mr. Yuravak connected me with Tylar, and she's been an incredible mentor," Kayla enthuses. "She's had the biggest impact on me at CVCC so far, and after talking to her, I feel inspired to pursue a career as a project manager."
This mentorship exemplifies the real-world connections and insights that CVCC strives to provide its students. By bridging the gap between education and industry, CVCC is helping students like Kayla not just learn skills, but envision and plan for their future careers.
As Kayla continues her journey in the Construction Trades program, she stands as a shining example of how career technical education can shape a student's future. Her improved time management skills, coupled with the mentorship and guidance she's receiving, are laying a solid foundation for a promising career in the construction industry.
Recently, Kayla was elected Vice President of CVCC’s local SkillsUSA chapter and is preparing to run for Regional Officer soon. “Tylar’s best advice to me was to get as involved as possible, especially with SkillsUSA. It’s been challenging, but also so rewarding. I can’t wait to keep getting involved and see where the organization takes me.”
Independence High School and CVCC are proud to spotlight Kayla's achievements and look forward to seeing her continue to grow and succeed in her chosen field.
