Independence High School (IHS) has launched the 2024-25 academic year with a series of innovative events designed to welcome students and prepare staff for an engaging school year ahead.
The festivities began on Wednesday, August 21, with the annual Freshman Festival. This student-led initiative, organized by class officers, student council members, and the 4C4P (Actively Caring for People) group, provided an immersive introduction to high school life for incoming 9th graders. The day-long event focused on fostering connections, familiarizing students with their teachers and the school environment, and showcasing the myriad opportunities awaiting them in the coming year.
On Friday, August 23, the school held its traditional Senior Sunrise event at the stadium. Seniors gathered at the crack of dawn, armed with blankets and yard games, to symbolically watch the sunrise on their final year of high school. The school provided donuts and juice, creating a memorable morning of camaraderie and reflection.
Principal Mike Janatovich commented, "The Senior Sunrise is a beautiful tradition that bookends their high school experience. We're looking forward to the Senior Sunset at the end of the year to bring it full circle."
Adding to the senior festivities, students showcased their creativity by painting their assigned parking spots, a colorful display of individuality and school spirit.
Behind the scenes, IHS teachers engaged in a productive opening day meeting on August 20, focusing on this year's theme of student engagement. The session involved honest discussions about classroom practices and strategies to keep students actively involved in their learning and the school environment.
As IHS embarks on the new school year, the combination of student-centered events and focused teacher development sets a positive tone for the months ahead. The school community looks forward to a year of growth, engagement, and achievement.
