Mike Pennington, Director of Curriculum and Technology for Independence Local Schools, has accepted a position as Assistant Superintendent at Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools. Pennington will begin his new role on August 1, pending board approval at Willoughby-Eastlake's July 8 meeting. This move comes after nine years of dedicated service to Independence Local Schools.
During his tenure, Pennington oversaw curriculum, instruction, and technology integration. "I want to express my sincere gratitude for the support, collaboration, and friendship the staff has shown me during my time at Independence," said Pennington. "The professional growth and experiences I've gained here have been invaluable, and I will carry them with me in my future endeavors."
The Independence Board of Education, administration, and newly appointed Superintendent Kelli Cogan are actively working on a transition plan to ensure continuity in curriculum development and technology services. The district remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining high standards in these critical areas ensuring that the quality of education remains uncompromised.
Superintendent Cogan will personally oversee curriculum matters for this school year. This hands-on approach will allow her to intimately familiarize herself with the district, engage directly with teachers and students, and conduct a thorough assessment of past data and current instructional practices from Pre-K through 12th grade. Cogan's extensive background and expertise in curriculum development position her uniquely to lead this crucial aspect of the district's operations.
For technology needs, the district will continue its partnership with QuadStar, an information technology company that has served the district for several years. QuadStar provides technology support for the district. They manage repairs and address Chromebook-related issues, ensuring uninterrupted technical support for students and staff.
Cogan plans to post an administrative position in the spring, which will allow her and the administrative team to assess the district’s needs and define this role.
