In a move that solidifies its commitment to serving military-connected students and families, Independence Middle School has been selected as a Purple Star School by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.
The Purple Star award recognizes schools that have demonstrated an unwavering dedication to supporting the unique wellness and academic needs of Ohio's military-connected youth. To earn this prestigious distinction, schools must meet a rigorous set of criteria established by the state's Purple Star Advisory Board.
"I am incredibly proud to announce that Independence Middle School has been chosen as a Purple Star School," said Stephen Dackin, Director of the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. "This designation is a testament to the school's remarkable efforts in ensuring the success and well-being of our military-connected students and their families."
The Purple Star award is valid for three years, and Independence Middle School will have the opportunity to apply for a renewal in the fall of 2026.
To earn the Purple Star designation, Independence Middle School has implemented several initiatives to support their military-connected students and families, including:
Selecting a dedicated Military Family Liaison, Michael Greene, to coordinate resources and support.
Hosting an annual Veterans Day program featuring projects, performances, and guest speakers.
Drafting a resolution for the Independence Board of Education to publicly promote and support military families.
Providing training and resources for staff to best support students with families on deployment or moving into the district.
Beginning the framework for future programs and events focusing on the needs of military children, including recognizing the Month of the Military Child.
Creating a dedicated webpage for families and community members to access resources and support.
Sending the Military Liaison to participate in the annual Purple Star USA National Convening of Schools & Communities.
"This recognition is a true honor and a reflection of the hard work and compassion of our dedicated faculty and staff," said Principal Jamie Vanek, Independence Middle School. "We are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all of our students, especially those with military connections, and this Purple Star designation underscores our unwavering commitment to that goal."
